The irony of trying to be healthier…

| billie@innov8gd.com

You know that moment when you decide it’s time to be fitter, stronger, healthier?

When you lace up your trainers, step outside, and channel your inner athlete? Yeah, I had that moment this morning.

It was my first run of the year, and let me tell you—I was ready. Muscles? Strong from all the calisthenics I’ve been doing. Mindset? Focused. Air quality? Apparently designed to destroy me. Because despite all my best intentions, I’m now coughing up a lung and wondering if fitness is actually trying to kill me.

How did I get here?

Like most people, I figured, hey, I should probably do more cardio. My body has been perfectly happy lifting, pushing, and pulling its way through workouts, so surely a run wouldn’t be that bad. Spoiler: It was that bad.

Two minutes in: Feeling strong, breathing like a functional human.
Five minutes in: Starting to notice that air is a little harder to come by.
Ten minutes in: Body still moving, but lungs filing for divorce.
Fifteen minutes in: Every decision I’ve ever made is questionable, and my internal organs are staging a full-scale protest.

Now, hours later, I’m sat here contemplating the cruel irony of exercise – trying to be healthier but actually feeling like I need medical attention.

This is a cartoon of a runner inhaling a hamster!

Is this normal? Or is my body just dramatic?

It turns out that, yes, this is perfectly normal. Running, especially after a break (or in my case, a seasonal hiatus), shocks the system. Apparently, muscles can be strong, but lungs take their sweet time catching up.

Plus, cold air + increased breathing rate = the perfect recipe for feeling like you’ve inhaled a small furry animal. Who knew? (Everyone. Everyone knew.)

Will I run again?

Honestly? Yes. Not because I enjoyed it, but because I refuse to let my own lungs win this battle. If they want to evict themselves from my body, they’ll have to try harder.

So, to anyone else out there trying to be healthier and immediately regretting it – I see you. Stay strong, stay stubborn, and most importantly, keep your Will up to date.
