This compact disc contains recordings of six large-scale polychoral works by Giovanni Gabrieli (c.1555 - 1612), Confitebor Tibi Domine, Magnificat a 12, Deus Qui Beatum Marcum, Exultet Jam Angelica, Hodie Christus Natus Est and Exaudi Deus. It also features the complete organ intonationi by Andrea Gabrieli (c.1510 - 1586) and a number of plainsong antiphons, anthems and hymns.

Both Giovanni Gabrieli and his uncle, Andrea, served as organists and principal composers of St Mark’s church in Venice. They specialized in the composition of polychoral motets using a cori spezzati technique, in which groups of instruments and/or voices, known as “choirs”, would be placed at some distance from each other, resulting in complex, stunning antiphonal effects. This recording was made in the resonant acoustic of Merton College Chapel, Oxford, with special attention paid to the recreation of a spatial performance.

The motets by Giovanni Gabrieli are performed in arrangements by Richard Smith, originally intended to facilitate performance of this unique repertoire by amateur choirs and instrumental groups.
